St Francis in his monk’s habit is shown here in retreat on Mt Alverna, where in 1224 he had a vision of a winged figure. While experiencing the vision the marks of Christ’s wounds appeared on his hands, feet and side, the last shown as an oval slit in his tunic. The cupids and delicate angels in the sky are typical of 18^thcentury painting.
