Valrene Tweedie, who danced with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in 1940, remembers:

I eventually became one of the girls it was an interesting ... It was based actually on Georgian dancing and you had to dance very very high on the ... points because you know the Georgian dancers the men actually dance on their toes and Fokine was very strict trying to get the boys in the company to dance very very high so that they looked like Georgian dancers. It was actually a Georgian story and theme. That was the quality of movement you had to try to get ... [the] ... footwork of the Georgians.
