Valrene Tweedie, who danced with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in 1940, remembers:

Dancing for the boys was very strong and very exciting. It was more a boys ballet than a girls ballet but it was still character work, it was not what people think of today as classical ballet, it was character dancing.
