Theme: The Land
Artist: Ragnar HANSEN Birth/Death: 1945 Title: Coffee pot Credit Line: Crafts Board of the Australia Council Collection 1980. National Gallery of Australia, Canberra An immigrant from Norway, Hansen arrived with the rigorous craft training and an understanding of the relationship between design and nature that characterised Scandinavian design during the 20th century. Masterly crafted by Ragnar Hansen in 1976, this vessel is sculptural and fluid. It breaks away from conventional silverware, by referring to the contours of landscape and water. Although working in an urban environment and creating objects for urban consumption, Hansen deliberately evokes the ancient eroded landscape of Australia in the undulating form of this lidded pot.
