This work satirises commercial religious statuary, adding the symbols of the ‘religions’ of sport and leisure to the standard European Madonna figure that was displayed in hundreds of churches across the country. By suggesting that such potent imagery can be made Australian with the addition of local motifs, Thompson comments on the way that cultural iconography enters Australia and is absorbed into the mainstream.
