National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Albert Namatjira was the leading light of a group of watercolourists at the Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission in Central Australian. The landscape paintings of Namatjira and other Arrernte artists were regarded as evidence of the success of the government’s policy of assimilating indigenous people into white Australian society. However, the subjects of their paintings were not merely chosen for their beauty, but for the ancestral significance of the land to the artists. More details Click image to enlarge
