Australian swagman Theme: The Land

Artist: Axel POIGNANT
Birth/Death: 1906–1986

Title: Australian swagman

Credit Line: National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

Axel Poignant identified with the self-sufficiency of the people of the outback. In 1953, just past the Springfield water tank on the road from Paroo to Menindie in the outback of New South Wales, he encountered an old man pushing a bike with no chain or pedals, carrying his bed-roll, billy, pots, tucker, water and some books.
