Theme: The Land
Artist: Russell DRYSDALE Birth/Death: 1912–1981 Title: Shopping day Credit Line: Art Gallery of New South Wales Purchased with funds provided by MEPC Australia Ltd 1988 Drysdale, who came from a wealthy land-owning family, felt tremendous sympathy for the Aboriginal people he met on his travels. Shopping day depicts the Aboriginal inhabitants of a north Queensland town in an entirely undramatic way. They stand, as though posing for the camera, in a wide, empty street. The scene is presided over by a war memorial. More details Click image to enlarge |
