Theme: The Land Artist: Anatjari No. 1 TJAMPITJINPA Birth/Death: 1927–1999 Title: Ceremonial ground Credit Line: Purchased 1992. National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. The intimate connection between people and the land is expressed in this scene of a ceremony where young men are initiated into higher levels of sacred knowledge of the Tingari — the ancestral law-makers of the Western Desert. The roundels that represent the participants also represent sacred sites.
