Kathleen O’Connor spent much of her working life in Paris. Among her favourite subjects was that of the Luxembourg gardens which she painted between 1906 and 1914, when she left for London at the beginning of the First World War. O’Connor rapidly sketched the figures in one sitting in front of the motif, and at a later date added a glaze varnish with charcoal or oil colour to achieve a lower tonality. In her Luxembourg Gardens paintings she observed everyday life with enchantment.
