For thirty years James W. R. Linton exerted a great influence on art in Perth, inspiring a new a generation of artists and encouraging a serious, professional approach to art. A winter’s day on the Swan was painted by the Swan River in the South Perth area, near Linton’s home. Moody in atmosphere, it portrays dramatic weather: with a dark threatening cloud on the right contrasted by the nearby white clouds, and reflected in the shade and light on the foreshore.
