Edmund DuCane was a Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers who volunteered to go to Western Australia where he remained for five years as superintendent of convict works in the Greenmount area. DuCane was also an amateur artist and made lively records of life and scenery in the colony, including this view near Toodyay north-east of Perth. It is an image of the terrain where DuCane and his convict labourers were constructing roads and bridges.
