Joan Campbell is known for her experimental ceramic work using the Japanese ‘raku’ firing technique. Using simple kilns, this a process by which smoked and iridescent surface effects can be achieved through the introduction of combustible materials, such as leaves and seaweed, into the kiln during firing and by rapid cooling of the object. Campbell worked with large organic forms inspired by the eroded surfaces of rock and limestone along the Western Australian coastline
