Group tours +
The Gallery offers a range of tours, talks and lectures covering a many topics relating to the Gallery's collections and exhibitions including art and design history, architecture, literature and history.
The special tours and lectures related to exhibitions are aimed at a various audiences – check the listing below or go to What's On for more information.
The Gallery also conducts sheduled guided tours of the permanent collection and major exhibitions that do not require bookings.
Groups can book any of the tours listed here. Booked tours require a minimum four weeks notice.

Schools can book groups into the Gallery from 10.00 am (AEST) weekdays. A minimum of one supervising adult to 15–20 students is required for school group tours, with the ratio of one adult to six children in early childhood tours. Entry is free to the collection and to special exhibitions for booked groups and students aged 16 and under.
Coach or tour companies
Please contact us about your visit even if a coach or tour company is organising your excursion. The return of our Confirmation of Education Service form will ensure you receive the service you require. Please contact us promptly if your plans change.

- Art Discovery tours
Discovery tours are interactive tours that provide an introduction to the collection and develop skills in analysing and appreciating art. (conducted by voluntary guides and recommended for upper primary school students)
- Visual art in context tours
45–60 minutes in length, tailored to a theme of your choice and/or linked to study areas (conducted by Gallery educators and recommended for secondary school students);
- Focus tours
Focus tours are tailored to a curriculum area as requested by the teacher when booking.
- Drawing tours
Drawing tours encourage students to interpret and discuss art through drawing.
- Early childhood tours
30–45 minute tours of the Gallery specially designed for young children and conducted by trained voluntary guides, Gallery Educators are available on request;
- Special access tours
for groups with special needs and abilities
- Special interest tours
for community groups, clubs and societies, conferences and VIPs
- Self-guided tours
We welcome self guided tours however please book your visit and note that teachers must remain with groups at all times
- Study sessions
Study sessions, conducted by Gallery educators, link the Gallery visit to classroom studies. Study sessions last 2–3 hours and may include tours, workshops, illustrated talks and films. Cost $7.00 per student
- Professional development for teachers
Professional development sessions for groups of teachers are organised on request and include exhibition previews as well as education resources and strategies.
