Richard Whiteley has developed a personal style of cast glass sculpture. His primary concern is the refractive and optical quality of his medium, notably the perceptual ambiguities generated by lens-like forms.
Given the technical difficulty of casting sizeable sculptures in glass, Whiteley's artistic repertoire is restricted to tapering, slab-like columns and similar geometric solids.
These works have a restricted palette based on a narrow range of steel greys, a dusky amethyst, and the deep bronze-green seen here. The impeccable surface is achieved by long and painstaking grinding and polishing by hand.
