Born Venice 1480, Died Loreto 1556. In comparison with his contemporaries, Giorgione, Titian and Vecchio, Lotto was a fairly traditional painter. He worked primarily on altarpieces, devotional pictures and portraiture. He is one of the best documented painters of the 16th century as 40 autograph letters dating from 1524 to 1539 survive as well as 75 signed paintings.
