Born Castelfranco Veneto c1477, Died Venice c1510. He is generally regarded as the founder of 16th century Venetian painting. During his brief 15 year career he invented an original style based on poetic suggestiveness, evoking a mood rather than a clear narrative. He often painted small canvases for private use with moody and dramatic landscapes playing an important role in his compositions. His hauntingly beautiful paintings were a great inspiration to Titian the dominant artist of 16th Century Venice.
