Biography
CALVERT, Matt, 1969

Born in Smithton, Tasmania, in 1969, Matt Calvert gained a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) from the University of Tasmania in 1993. He was subsequently a recipient of a Samstag Scholarship, which he took up in 1994 at Goldsmiths College, University of London, completing a Master of Arts in 1995. In the same year Calvert travelled to France to take up a residency at the McCulloch Studio, CitÉ International des Arts, Paris. In 1998 and 1999 he was awarded Asialink residencies in Kuang, Malaysia, and in 2000 he was an artist-in-residence in Sapporo, Japan. Calvert has received several commissions for public sculptures and has been included in exhibitions and awards in Australia, Malaysia, Japan and the United Kingdom, among them the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, 2001; Too Strange, Hobart, 2001; Sapporo Artists-in-Residence Exhibition, Contemporary Art Institute, Sapporo, Japan, 2000; Sekali Lagi: Australian artists revisit Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, 1999; and Wish You Were Here, Brisbane, 1999. Matt Calvert lives and works in Hobart.
