Australia Day, the 26th of January, was proclaimed a Day of Mourning in 1938 and has historically been protested by Aboriginal Australia. In 1988, the year of Australia’s Bicentenary, the Freedom, Justice and Hope March protested the original invasion of Australia, and its re-enactment in Sydney two hundred years after it began. Over 50,000 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people formed this March in 1988 in celebration of Aboriginal Australia’s cultural and spiritual survival.
