Previous Page Parent Page Next Page Mervyn Bishop was Australia’s first Aboriginal press photographer. In speaking of his time at the Sydney Morning Herald (where he commenced a four year photography cadetship in 1962) Bishop has said: "I had entered the assimilated world of the White institution. There were very few Aboriginal people in any profession and hardly any that I could share my experience with in Sydney. My Aboriginality was in different places, but there was no place for it at the Herald and at that time work played a large part in my life and future plans."
