Sound intrudes into every aspect of our modern lives. But how often do we really listen?
Liquid Architecture 6 asks you to stop and listen. Listen to sound in all its manifestations: as music, as noise, as art.
Liquid Architecture is Australia’s national sound arts festival, now in its sixth year. It presents a series of exciting and invigorating live performances, installations, screen programs, artist talks and forums taking place in five cities through the month of July. This year the festival has spread to Canberra and Cairns for the first time.
‘Sound as art is difficult to define,’ admits LA artistic director Nat Bates. ‘Mercurial and nebulous, it fluidly exists in the void between the emotional and the physical. Its resistance to the definitive is one of its key attractions for artists. Nonetheless, Liquid Architecture 6 is an attempt to define contemporary sound arts practice in Australia.’
The highlight of the festival this year is DJ Olive from the land of loud Americans, who will charm audiences with his unique take on turntablism and vinyl sounds. His creation of the term ‘illbient’ is a reflection on the new scene of rooftop parties in Brooklyn. His work ranges from ‘beats in the backyard sunrise kinda vibe’ to his recent Buoy release, intended as music to fall sleep to.
The program also features a forum where artists will discuss current issues and personal perspectives on sound art.
Liquid Architecture 6 in Canberra is a collaboration between the National Gallery of Australia and the Centre for New Media Arts, Australian National University.
