Biography

Roman Opalka was born of Polish parents in Abbeville, France, on 27 August 1931. Educated in Poland, he studied at the Academy of fine Arts, Warsaw, from 1957 to 1960. He held his first solo exhibition in 1966 at Dom Artysty Plastyka Gallery, Warsaw. Initially his reputation was as a printmaker. He won first prize at the Bradford Print Biennale, Yorkshire, England, in 1968 and the gold medal for graphic art in Zielona, Poland, in 1969. In 1970 he won both the grand prize at the International Biennale of graphic art in Cracow and a prize at the International Graphics Biennale in Tokyo. In 1973 he held his first museum exhibition at the Museum Folkwang, Essen. Since 1974 he has regularly held solo exhibitions with John Weber Gallery, New York. In 1974 he was given an exhibition at the Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels, which travelled to the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam. He was awarded a painting prize at the Bienal, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1978. Opalka lives and works in France.
