Theme: The Land
Artist: Sam FULLBROOK Birth/Death: 1922 Title: Jacob Obaju Credit Line: National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Jacob Obaju, who sat for this picture in an old bus in Port Headland, was an elder in the aboriginal community of the Pindara Cooperative - 'one of the business men of the McLeod people'. The portrait was left unfinished then reworked in Sydney, with Obaju being stripped of a few years. 'I have painted a young man instead of the original elder. One could title such a picture "A Kimberley Stockman" or any such suitable description', wrote Sam Fullbrook in a February 1957 letter to Terry Clune. More details Click image to enlarge |
