Axel Poignant identified with the self-sufficiency of the people of the outback. In 1953, just past the Springfield water tank on the road from Paroo to Menindie in the outback of New South Wales, he encountered an old man pushing a bike with no chain or pedals, carrying his bed-roll, billy, pots, tucker, water and some books.
