Table centrepiece Theme: Beginnings

Artist: Bertram Edgar MACKENNAL
Birth/Death: 1863–1931

Title: Table centrepiece

Credit Line: Private Collection

Bertram Mackennal studied at Melbourne's National Gallery School alongsied artists such as Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. Mackennal was profoundly impressed by Rodin, whom he met in Paris in 1884. The sensuality of Table centrepiece owes a debt to Rodin's influence. The figure of Truth or Virtue steps forward confidently, her movement accentuating the curve of her body.
