Artist: Edward MADELEY Birth/Death: Title: Chair Credit Line: Collection, Art Gallery of WA: Gift of the Premier's Dept, through Sir Douglas and Lady Kendrew, 1987 Edward Madeley’s exuberant woodcarving celebrated one of Western Australia’s unique resources, the rich hardwood of the abundant South-West jarrah forests. He was commissioned by the Western Australian Government to make this ceremonial chair as a centrepiece of its stand at the 1907 Franco–British Exhibition in London. The promotional display was typical of the presentations made by the newly-Federated Australian states at such at intercolonial and international exhibitions, in which art, crafts and trades were selected or commissioned to embody regional aspiration and achievement.
