Kevin Gordon approaches the design of his glass objects as would the disciplined eye of a lapidarist. After working with glassblower David Hay to build up vessels with three- and four-colour glass overlays, Gordon examines the possibilities of colour and light in this layered material before planning and executing the cutting and polishing that reveals its depth. In Quartz he has cut through the layers of glass to create a fragmented, crystalline surface that further excites the eye with its articulation of iridescent gold and silver leaf on the surface of the glass. Here light, refraction and colour become the elements of structure, forcing the eye to complete a composition that, like a view through a kaleidoscope, can never be fully grasped or repeated
