This work – a tubular ring of laser-cut steel elements in the shape of stars, designed to be suspended or wall-mounted – developed from Alice Whish’s research into the imagery of star constellations and the technical possibilities of laser-cutting and computer-aided design. While it has resulted from high technical and mathematical complexity, its ethereal quality is emphasised by its apparent weightlessness and transparency. Whish does not provide any point of reference for the viewer in the structure of the work, instead allowing the eye to drift across and through its visual permutations.
