Tanija and Graham Carr have worked in partnership since 1982, developing all aspects of their work as a team. The construction of large, complex vessels in leather has remained the dominant theme of their work. Their architectural background informs all of their work, in which incised and dyed raw cowhide – a material usually associated with softness – is used as a hard structural element. While these forms are tightly controlled and bound, the material remains pliable and resilient, its character and texture made evident by the artists’ scoring, incising, dyeing and polishing of its surfaces. Beyond its vessel form, Untitled bowl form is an object that defies classification, generating curiosity about its origin and fuelling the provocation that accompanies artefacts made from animal products.
