Ron Nagle’s work is synonymous with Californian ceramics, eschewing functional form while embracing its most traditional techniques of overglaze painting. Drawing visual imagery from the world of hot rods and car customising, the styling and packaging of commercial products, and the flat graphics of pulp advertising and comic books, Nagle creates small, ambiguous and enigmatic objects on the theme of the cup and the small container. His works are deliberately intense with colour and flawless in their craftsmanship. While Nagle evokes the world of product display in such works, he also references the visual complexity and playfulness of Japanese commercial food presentation and packaging, linking them to the non-western aesthetic that influences much San Francisco craft and design. Bordeauxbloccaptures these qualities, inviting intimacy with wit and mystery.
