Justine Dieuhl was a dancer at the Moulin de Galette, a leading dance hall in Paris frequented by the young working-class. She was painted by Lautrec twice, dressed modestly with her dark hair arranged on her forehead in an elaborate kiss curl – something of a personal signature for her.
Dieuhl’s curl, elaborate hat and wide-eyed stare combine Realism with aspects of caricature. Here, Lautrec’s great appreciation of Honoré Daumier and Paul Gavarni is evident.
