Clausen painted many scenes of labourers in the fields. In The haymakers he combined his interest in interior and exterior views, looking at the scene from within the barn, contre-jour. In contrast to the theatricality of some Edwardian paintings, Clausen’s work was simple and unaffected, although he tended to idealise rural themes.
