Artists have often painted their own portraits as a means of self-enquiry. At the time Patterson painted Self-portrait he was feeling insecure and experiencing self-doubt. Patterson suggested the inner darkness that he felt by presenting himself as a dark silhouette against the open window. He expressed his hopes for a more positive future in the brighter image reflected in the mirror.
