Night (no.2) depicts the sitting room of Orpen’s house in London, looking out through a tall window into the night sky. It shows Orpen’s wife, Grace, in an armchair, arching back towards her husband who leans over her, to meet him in an embrace. Orpen had married Grace Knewstub six years before he painted Night (no.2), and the image conveys the happiness and comfortable warmth of the early years of their marriage.
