John Adrian Louis Hope (1860–1908) was the first Governor-General of Australia, from 1901 to 1902. In 1902 he was humiliated by the government’s refusal to increase his salary, and he asked to be recalled. On his return to Britain in 1902 he was created Marquis of Linlithgow. Tom Roberts painted this portrait after Linlithgow had returned to Britain, showing him in his public role, in full dress uniform.
