The model, Edie McNeill, was a sister of Dorelia, Augustus John’s second wife and favourite model. Like Dorelia, who posed for John’s La Belle jardinière, Edie was dark haired with a tanned complexion. Lamb, John and Derwent Lees all painted images of artistic women in imaginary landscapes.
