Charles Conder often depicted groups of women in elegant dress. These two women sitting in a theatre appear to be in competition with each other, with one woman looking at the viewer and the other, somewhat suspiciously, at her companion. The Edwardians frequented the theatre and the music halls, where they watched one another as much as they looked at the performers on the stage.
