Orpen painted many self-portraits. He once dressed up as the French painter Jean-Baptiste Chardin for a Covent Garden ball. In Self-portrait with glasses he presented himself in a similar manner to the way Chardin had portrayed himself in his Self-portrait with pince-nez 1771 (Louvre, Paris).
