Francis Derwent Wood’s privately produced bust of his friend, the Australian painter Tom Roberts, is an affectionate and insightful portrait of the older artist. Roberts’ expression is alert and inquisitive and he is depicted as though momentarily turning his head to listen to or to look at something closely. Wood enhanced the liveliness of this work through his animated treatment of the surface and expressive modeling of form, particularly in the lapels and coat of his subject.
