Rodin was Whistler’s successor as President of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers in London. The two artists had known each other for many years and Rodin was the obvious choice as sculptor for a memorial to Whistler. Using Gwen John as the model for the working drawings and the sculpture, Rodin created an image of a muse in meditation.
