In 1886, Russell visited Belle-Ile, a small island in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of Brittany, to study the effects and subtleties of colour. Russell and Monet painted there together during the summer and a local fisherman, Père Polyte, became Monet’s porter and a model for both artists. In Mon ami Polite Russell depicted Polyte as a man of dignity and character.
