Thea Proctor was a significant person in Lambert’s life, as a friend, colleague and model. In this portrait, however, Lambert was not just painting his friend, he was also painting a showpiece. He placed his sitter in an imaginary landscape, in the manner of earlier artists such as Thomas Gainsborough. He idealised the image to achieve a sophisticated elegance, elongating the neck, torso and limbs.
