McEvoy’s shy, pensive girl, absorbed in her book, is remarkably of her time. Edwardian artists often depicted middle-class women reading quietly in intimate interiors. Confined indoors, with only a hint of the outside world through the reflected light on the curtains, McEvoy’s subject reaches out beyond the limitations of this room through her reading.
