Mrs Lavery sketching was probably painted outdoors. The almost strolling pose and the sunshade umbrella were devices used by the French Impressionists. In 1909, Lavery married Hazel Trudeau (1880–1935), a beautiful and inspiring woman who Lavery painted many times.
