This pastoral painting is unique in Dowling’s oeuvre. The cattle in the foreground are Jeremiah Ware’s Shorthorns and Ayrshires. The time of day is late afternoon, as suggested by the shadows in the foreground. Beneath the homestead a woman and child enjoy the sunshine. To the left of the homestead a woman stokes a fire and another carries a basket of washing.
