Welcome to a day of creative community fun in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Australia.
Drop-in workshops are designed for children and their families, are free of charge and take place in the Sculpture Garden. Activities are facilitated by local artists and Gallery voluntary guides, art conservators and education and public programs staff. Parents are asked to supervise their children at all times.

Art materials used on the day are kindly supplied by The Art Store.

Visit the event information desk in the grassed area for assistance and information.

10.30 am - 12.30 pm Art workshops

• ‘Fun for the little one’ (grass area)
  Margie Kevin, co-ordinator
  Enjoy play dough, drawing, sensory and water play activities under the trees.

• ‘Leave a trace’ (paved area near Gallery building)
  Penny Low, co-ordinator
  Strike a pose and have your body traced to mark your presence at this event and make a giant record of today.

• ‘The Coral Fortress’ (grass area)
  Teffany Thiedeman, co-ordinator
  Make coral-like shapes using clay and moulds to add to the great clay colony and watch the coral fortress grow! Alternatively go solo, play with clay and make your own creation.
• ‘Funky junk’ (gravel area)
  Amanda Stuart and Amelia Zaraftis, co-ordinators
  Transform everyday materials into fantastic sculpture.

• ‘Drawing in between’ (paved area overlooking the lake)
  Adriane Boag, co-ordinator
  Focus on the landscape and the spaces ‘in between’ with collaborative and individual drawing using ink and charcoal, sticks and feathers.
• ‘Station conservation’ (paved area near Gallery building)
  Lisa Addison, Cathy Collins, Thomasina Fox and Fran Wild, co-ordinators
  Chat to Gallery Conservation staff as they clean the sculptures. Become a mini-conservator and learn about how and why sculptures need to be cared for. Make a conservation experiment to take home and test.

10.30 am – 1.30 pm Contribute to site installations with local artists

• ‘Simply rubbery’ (grass area)
  Simon Scheuerle
  Simon will be creating a colour field from blobs of silicon rubber. Help him add to this installation.
• ‘Dreamscape’ (grass area)
  Jennifer Jones and Phil Nizette (Wellspring Environmental Arts and Design)
  Make quirky contributions to the 'Dreamscape' and help create a space of fantasy and fun. Objects from your imagination and dreams will hang, float and mingle to make a dreamlike environment.

• ‘Sticks and mud’ (grass area)
  Tony Steel
  Create your own natural sculpture. Bind grasses and mud to make organic constructions then paint your form in richly coloured rock ochres.

Sculpture Garden Children’s trail:

Collect a pencil and activity booklet from the event information desk and have fun exploring the Sculpture Garden for the remainder of the day. The fog sculpture will be functioning from 11 am – 12 pm and 12.30 – 2 pm .

Theatre:

• 10.30 am - 11.15 am
• 11.45 am - 12.30 pm

Actors barb barnett from Serious Theatre and Mem Bossard will engage audiences with a theatrical response to sculpture during the morning.

Music:

• 10.30 am - 11.00 am ‘String Theory’ string quartet, Canberra Grammar School
• 11.00 am - 11.30 am ‘The Wayfarers’ junior choir
• 11.30 am - 12.15 pm ‘String Theory’ string quartet, Canberra Grammar School
• 12.30 pm - 1.30 pm ‘The Cashews’ 

Food:

• If you haven’t brought a picnic, enjoy the sausage sizzle and support the Isabella Plains Scouts
• coffee cart
• NGA café and Members’ Lounge indoors

Safety in the Sculpture Garden:

To keep your family and the works of art safe, please:

• supervise your children at all times
• enjoy looking at the sculptures without touching them
• keep art materials within the workshop area and at a safe distance from the sculptures
• access first aid and sunscreen available at the information desk

Photography:

Photography is permitted in the Sculpture Garden (but without using a flash or tripod).

Your child may be photographed during the course of this event by an official Gallery or press photographer who will request your permission. Photographs are used in Gallery publications and promotional material without the insertion of the child’s full name.
