The National Gallery of Australia offers professional development sessions for teachers in conjunction with special exhibitions, and the opportunity to explore the permanent collection. Teacher's in-services and exhibition previews are scheduled throughout the year. Teachers can book guided tours of the permanent collection, special exhibitions and the Sculpture Garden on request. Gallery educators can also assist teachers plan visits to meet specific curriculum needs.
Professional development sessions at the Gallery can be arranged for schools, academic departments, or special interest groups upon request. Sessions cover topics such as the Gallery's education services and programs, collection areas and forthcoming exhibitions. Gallery tours and activities, such as hands-on projects can be tailored to specific curriculum areas. Picture Paradise: the first century of Asia-Pacific photography 1840s -1940s

This exhibition is suitable for all students of photography, history and Asian studies. Photographers from South and Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific, to the west coast of North America reveal the beauty and cultural diversity of their regions.

Visual literacy and art
Create, present and appreciate

Discover the language of the visual arts and what the Gallery can offer to support teachers and student learning. This workshop aligns with the ACT curriculum framework exploring:
- ELA 7 – The student creates, presents and appreciates artistic works
- ELA 11 – The student critically interprets and creates texts.
All enrolments need to be made online through the Professional Learning Calendar: activated.act.edu.au/calendar/eventsmenu.aspx. Enrolment closes Wednesday 6 August 2008 (maximum two teachers per school).
Home at last
Children’s Gallery | 13 September 2008 – 1 February 2009
This exhibition is suitable for preschool and primary students. The exhibition will focus on the centrality of home to the experience of childhood featuring a range of media that explore house and garden and the ‘spaces’ of home, furniture and household objects, toys and play and rituals and relationships. Works of art are drawn from the Australian and Aboriginal Art collections with a focus on the Australian experience across time and place.

Degas
12 December 2008 – 22 March 2009 | nga.gov.au/Degas
An extensive examination of Degas’ painting, sculpture, drawing, monotypes and prints, the exhibition will highlight his role as a key figure in the development towards modern art. Degas traces the evolution of the artist’s style from finely crafted paintings to exuberant canvases with brilliant palettes and loose brushwork.
