National Gallery of Australia welcomes new Chairman

19 December 2005

The new Chairman of the National Gallery of Australia,  Rupert Myer AM, whose appointment was officially announced by the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, said that he was looking forward to working with the National Gallery of Australia, its Council and Director, Ron Radford AM.

Mr Myer is currently Chairman of the Myer Family Company Pty Ltd and Vice President of the Myer Foundation. He has been a Council Member of the National Gallery of Australia since 2003 and is a board member of the National Gallery of Australia Foundation. He is chairman of Kaldor Art Projects and serves as a member of the Felton Bequests' Committee. Mr Myer has also recently been appointed to the Foundation of Art Exhibitions Australia.

He has formerly served as a Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria and as a board member of the Museum of Contemporary Art. In January 2005 Mr Myer was made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to the arts, for support to museums and galleries and to the community through a range of philanthropic and service organisations.

Over the years Mr Myer has been a strong supporter of the arts, with life long interests particularly in contemporary Australian and Australian Indigenous art. In 2001 he Chaired the Commonwealth Government’s Inquiry into the Contemporary Visual Arts and Craft Sector.

Following the announcement of his appointment Mr Myer said “I would like to express my personal appreciation to the former Chairman of the National Gallery of Australia, Harold Mitchell AO, who has done such an outstanding job. During Harold’s time, the Gallery has grown both in importance and prominence through key acquisitions and exhibitions. His personal benefactions combined with other significant acts of benefaction during his term have significantly assisted the Gallery in its key roles.”

“This is a vibrant and much-loved Gallery. I am keen to ensure that the aspirations contained in Ron Radford’s recent excellent vision paper are pursued with vigor, particularly in relation to a strong desire to build the National Gallery of Australia's Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Island collections and to ensure that major exhibitions at the Gallery reflect the type of art that will draw supporters and the general public to the Gallery in Canberra and to wherever its collections are exhibited.”

Director of the National Gallery of Australia, Ron Radford, welcomed the appointment of Rupert Myer as Chairman of the National Gallery of Australia Council.

"Mr Myer has been a member of the National Gallery Council since early 2003 and is currently the Chairman of the Acquisitions Committee of the National Gallery of Australia. I am very much looking forward to working with him to achieve our vision for the National Gallery of Australia, to build on the successes of the past and to present a new future" he said.

Ron Radford also acknowledged the outstanding contribution of retiring Chairman, Harold Mitchell. "During his term as both a Member (1998-2001) and Chairman (2001-2005) of the National Gallery of Australia's Council Mr Mitchell gave a great deal of his time, passion and enthusiasm and made a significant impact on the National Gallery's direction during that time. He has also been a very generous benefactor. On behalf of the staff of the Gallery I would like to publicly thank him and wish him well for the future."
