The Alcoa gift to the National Gallery of Australia

Alcoa Australia will formally present six donated works of art by some of Australia's most significant painters to the National Gallery of Australia on Wednesday 21 September. This generous gift, made possible by the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts program, includes Jeffrey Smart's Waiting for the train c. 1970 and Playground at Piraeus c. 1970; Robert Juniper's Ferns and flowers c. 1968; Ray Crooke's Ant hill country, Laura c. 1969 and Landscape with rocks in the foreground c. 1968; and Fred Williams' Landscape 1977.

The gift will be accepted by the National Gallery of Australia Council Chairman, Harold Mitchell, and Director, Ron Radford. This generous gift by Alcoa World Alumina Australia to the National Gallery of Australia is an important addition to in the Gallery’s collection. It is also an outstanding example of corporate support of the arts.

Attending the unveiling will be acclaimed Australian artist Jeffery Smart, whose works Waiting for the train and Playground at Piraeus are part of the generous Alcoa gift.

Since Alcoa has operated in Australia it has formed some wonderful partnerships within the arts community and has played an important part in Australia’s cultural history. The unveiling of the works will be attended by Wayne Osborn, Managing Director of Alcoa Australia.

Senator for the ACT, Gary Humphries, will represent the Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport at the unveiling of the works, and will acknowledge the significant contribution Alcoa has made to the arts in this country and the role of the Cultural Gifts program in facilitating such wonderful gifts to our public collections.

The paintings will be formally unveiled on Wednesday 21 September at 12.00 pm at the National Gallery of Australia. All interested media are invited to assemble at 12.00 pm in the main foyer.
