New Head of Australian Art

The Council of the National Gallery of Australia has appointed Dr Anna Gray as the Gallery's new Head of Australian Art.

Dr Gray is currently Director of the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of Western Australia, and is completing a 12 month secondment with the National Library of Australia where she is editing the 44 volumes of the Donald Friend Diaries.

Gallery Director Dr Brian Kennedy said that the Council is delighted that Dr Gray is joining the Gallery, and he personally is keen to welcome such a respected art historian to the staff. She will take up her appointment in February 2001.

Dr Kennedy said that the Gallery acknowledges the contribution of John McDonald as Head of Australian Art and wishes him well with his future projects. He will continue his association with the exhibition which he curated: Federation: Australian Art and Society 1901-2001, during its national tour.

"Dr Gray has over 20 years museum experience, including 15 years in management positions - 10 years as Head of Art at the Australian War Memorial and 5 years as Director of the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. Dr Gray has published widely in the field of Australian art and culture, and on British art and international prints. She also has an outstanding record as a curator", Dr Kennedy said.
